Western Great Lakes Woodlands
Prairie Effigy Bowl
Wood: Unidentified burl
c. 1820
15 7/8"Width x 5 1/8"Height

Possibly the finest regional example extant of a Prarie Effigy Bowl.

Although it was carved nearly two hundred years ago, the lyrical line treatment of this bowl is completely modern. Symmetrically composed, the basin is wide and shallow with elegantly castelated sides thought to depict two opposing Manitou in reductive pose.

This piece is illustrated and discussed in John W. Painter, A Window on the Past Volume II, 2003, p. 99
