Eastern Great Lakes Woodlands
Effigy Pipe of Female Body
Wood: Maple Burl
c. 1780
2 1/2"
Height

Seated male figures have been part of the Woodlands vernacular on pipes and ladles for centuries, however the female subject and subtle erotic nature of this pipe are both unique and compelling.

The carver of this pipe found grace in accentuating the roundness of the form, from the figure’s hips, knees and the incurvate small of her back. A pipe stem would have been fitted between her legs.

The pipe bowl is well carbonized and exhibits a history of extensive use.
