Wolf Effigy Scoop

Wood: Elm Burl
c. 1720 -1740
11"Length x 5 1/8" Wide

The wolf effigy on this scoop is highly abstracted and may be seen by following the rounded terminal of the handle, which represents a wolves muzzle, then the eye ridge and then its ears, followed by a slightly arched back and into the tail (which in its utilitarian purpose acts as a thumb stop).

The fineness of the carving is exceptional and its execution is masterful - the bowl of the scoop is uniformly carved to a thickness of just 1/16 of an inch.

This is the only such Woodlands effigy scoop that has been documented.
